Export your Proton Pass items to CSV, JSON or PGP ZIP — where the option lives, what the file holds, and how to delete it safely when you are done.

Before you start: You can export from the Proton Pass browser extension, web app, or Windows app — but not from the mobile apps. The export is a plain-text file unless you pick the encrypted option below, so handle it with care.

    Open Proton Pass

    Open Proton Pass (browser extension, web app, or desktop app).

    Click the gear icon (Settings). In the browser extension, click the Proton logo first, then the gear.

    Open the Export tab.

Which format should I pick?

CSV Best for Simply Once

Easiest to import into most password managers.

JSON

Keeps more data, like notes and custom fields.

PGP-encrypted ZIP

Best if you’re keeping it as a backup — you set a passphrase.

If you just want everything moved into Simply Once, CSV is the most broadly compatible choice.

Good to know. If you chose the PGP-encrypted ZIP and need to open it elsewhere, install GPG4Win on Windows, or use the built-in PGP tools on macOS / Linux, to decrypt it.

Keep the file safe

  • This file lists every saved password in the clear — treat it like cash.
  • Delete it the moment your import into Simply Once is done.
  • Never email it or upload it to cloud storage.
  • Don’t share the file with anyone.
  • Use Shift + Delete on Windows, or empty your Trash on a Mac, so it can’t be recovered.

Frequently asked questions

Is the exported file encrypted?
No. The export is plain text — anyone who opens it can read every entry. Delete it as soon as your import into Simply Once is done.
Will exporting remove my passwords from Proton Pass?
No. Exporting makes a copy. Your saved passwords stay in Proton Pass.
What should I do with the file after I import it?
Delete it permanently. Use Shift + Delete on Windows or empty your Trash on a Mac so it can’t be recovered.
